WEST AKRON — Current and past members of the Firestone Community Learning Center’s swim team came together for some friendly competition at the school’s natatorium Dec. 23 for the team’s annual Alumni Swim Meet.

Shown below, swimmers take their mark for the 50-meter breaststroke event.

It was a night of team spirit for Firestone senior Sal Pietrosanti, junior Matt Cymerman, Cullen Young from the Class of 2024, Sam Kmet from the Class of 2023 and freshman Carter Young.

The Richard S Wagner scholarship was initiated in 1983 to recognize the long-standing interest and commitment of Dick Wagner to the Firestone High School Swimming and Diving program.  Dick provided his time and talents to the betterment of competitive swimming and the Firestone program from 1970 until his death in 2020.  Dick was not only interested in his 4 children and 3 grandchildren who all swam for Firestone; he attended hundreds of swim meets and cared about every swimmer and diver who competed for the Falcons.

In 2020, Dick’s 4 children and many friends of Firestone swimming endowed the Richard S Wagner Memorial Swimming Scholarship at the Akron Community Foundation in his honor. This endowment will provide an annual scholarship in perpetuity.

Contributions to the scholarship may be made to the Akron Community Foundation and are tax exempt as a charitable donation.
