The Ohio High School Athletic Association postseason got underway for girls basketball and swimming this past weekend. It wrapped up yet another busy week for area winter sports athletes.
Firestone senior Jonny Marshall finished first four times and set two meet records Saturday in the Division I boys swimming sectional championship meet at the University of Akron’s Ocasek Natatorium.
Marshall set meet records in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:40.11 and the 100 backstroke in 48.46 seconds. He won Division I state championship in the 100 backstroke as a sophomore and junior.
Firestone won the boys 200 freestyle relay in 1:29.51 with Marshall, Nick Michael, Mason Brady and Stanley Niekamp and the 400 freestyle relay in 3:17.06 with Brady, Sam Kmet, Niekamp and Marshall.
The top two in each event automatically advanced to the district meet at Cleveland State University’s Busbey Natatorium on Saturday, Feb. 18.
Hudson won the sectional girls and boys team titles at UA. The Explorers girls team scored 488.5 points and the boys team finished with 412 points.
Firestone finished second in both meets with the girls team scoring 299.5 points and the boys team scoring 260 points. Nordonia placed third in the girls meet with 248 points and Stow was third in the boys meet with 239 points.
Hudson senior Marisa Schenkenberger won the girls 200 individual medley in 2:11.17.

On Saturday, November 5, 2022 our team will hold our 34th Annual Marathon Swim! This event, called “Kids Helping Kids” has always been a lot of fun and builds team unity at the start of our swim season. Even more important, our “Kids Helping Kids” campaign has enabled our team to donate over $193,000 to Akron Children’s Hospital since the Marathon was started over thirty years ago. This tradition was started to honor a former FHS swimmer who had been battling cancer.
Our efforts on November 5th will help to fulfill a new challenge – the fourth year of a five-year $25,000 pledge to assist in the renovations and creation of the new Rehabilitation Services outpatient sub-waiting room. There will be a swimmer in each lane from 6:00am to 6:00pm. With your financial support, our teammates will be able to continue this fine tradition, fulfilling our pledge to the hospital. Donations to help fulfill the team’s goal should be made payable to Firestone High Aquatic Association (FHAA). All donations are tax deductible. No amount is too small – it all adds up! Checks can be mailed directly to the pool (@ Firestone High Aquatic Association 470 Castle Blvd Akron, OH 44313) or you can use PayPal to make donations via credit card.
Your donation is greatly appreciated by Akron Children’s Hospital and the Firestone High School Swim Team. Please help us reach our goal and make the start of this swim season one to remember!
