🌊 Firestone Swimming Presents: 37th Annual Kids Helping Kids Swim Marathon 🏊‍♀️

For nearly four decades, Firestone Swimming has proudly supported Akron Children’s Hospital through our Kids Helping Kids Swim Marathon. Since 1989, our swimmers have raised over $208,000 to help fund vital hospital projects like:

• Renovations for patient treatment and pre-op rooms
• Equipment for the Pediatric Orthopedic and Cardiology units
• The in-patient rehabilitation center and outpatient rehab clinic
• A tutoring program for oncology patients

This year’s marathon continues our commitment to the 2nd year of a five-year, $25,000 pledge supporting tutoring for children undergoing cancer treatment.

Following the 35th annual “Kids Helping Kids” Swim Marathon held last fall, our class of 2024 swimmers presented a check to Akron Children’s Hospital (ACH). The fundraiser, which was first launched to honor a former Firestone swimmer who was battling cancer, has provided more than $200,000 to ACH to support the Burn Unit, an adolescent patient room, an adolescent patient exercise room, the Center for Child Advocacy, arthroscopy equipment, Child Life Initiatives, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and a new inpatient rehabilitation center. A portion of this year’s marathon funds fulfilled the team’s five-year $25,000 pledge to assist in the renovations and creation of the new Rehabilitation Services outpatient sub-waiting room.

WEST AKRON — The Firestone Community Learning Center Swimming and Diving Team’s 34th annual “Kids Helping Kids” Swim Marathon with 31 participants Nov. 5 raised almost $23,000, some of which will support a project at Akron Children’s Hospital (ACH).

The fundraiser, begun to honor a former Firestone swimmer who was battling cancer, has donated more than $193,000 to ACH to support the Burn Unit; an adolescent patient room; an adolescent patient exercise room; the Center for Child Advocacy; arthroscopy equipment; Child Life Initiatives; the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; and a new inpatient rehabilitation center. Contributions for the fundraiser are still being accepted at www.firestoneswimming.org under “Donations.”

According to Erin Crabtree, assistant coach and marathon coordinator, some of the money raised will support team expenses and other projects. “Our 2022-23 team is a great mix of returning, very experienced veterans, some incoming freshmen with experience and a handful of new members that will help round-out very strong teams for both the boys and girls,” she said. “The new swimmers are picking up and learning very quickly and will be able to contribute to the already solid line-ups. We are all very excited for a very successful upcoming season.”

On Saturday, November 5, 2022 our team will hold our 34th Annual Marathon Swim! This event, called “Kids Helping Kids” has always been a lot of fun and builds team unity at the start of our swim season. Even more important, our “Kids Helping Kids” campaign has enabled our team to donate over $193,000 to Akron Children’s Hospital since the Marathon was started over thirty years ago. This tradition was started to honor a former FHS swimmer who had been battling cancer.

Our efforts on November 5th will help to fulfill a new challenge – the fourth year of a five-year $25,000 pledge to assist in the renovations and creation of the new Rehabilitation Services outpatient sub-waiting room. There will be a swimmer in each lane from 6:00am to 6:00pm. With your financial support, our teammates will be able to continue this fine tradition, fulfilling our pledge to the hospital. Donations to help fulfill the team’s goal should be made payable to Firestone High Aquatic Association (FHAA). All donations are tax deductible. No amount is too small – it all adds up!
